ESD Storage Solutions

Industrial static control is increasing in demand and many businesses are looking for ways to reduce static damage in their workplaces. Antistatic storage and handling products have high technical bespoke material composition to lower the resistance so that when grounded, electrostatic charges will be removed to ground thus protecting your ESD sensitive devices inside.

Every surface on which ESDS are placed must be connected to ground, and have a point-to-point resistance between 1 x 10^(4)Ω and 1 x 10^(10)Ω, and resistance-to-ground between 7.5 x 10^(5)Ω and 1 x 10^(9)Ω. Surface to ground resistance values may be achieved by including discrete resistors in the ground path, or by the resistance of the material which is directly grounded. When surfaces (example: chrome plated steel) have a point-to-point resistance lower than 1 x 10^(4)Ω, for housing ESD sensitive devices, use proper static dissipative boxes or mats. ESD racks, carts and shelving are great options to use for safely transporting static sensitive goods.

Before we get into more depth about ESD storage and handling, it is important to understand what ESD is and the effects of it.

What is electrostatic discharge (ESD)?

Electrostatic discharge can occur when two surfaces come into contact and create friction with each other. Examples include: walking over synthetic floors, rubbing of synthetic garments, shifting of plastic boxes, unrolling of PVC adhesive tape and moving of conveyor belt.

This builds up an electrostatic charge as one surface becomes positively charged and the other surface becomes negatively charged causing an imbalance.

ESD is the hidden enemy in a high tech manufacturing environments. Modern electronic circuitry can be literally burned or melted from these miniature lightning bolts. ESD control is therefore necessary to reduce and limit these ESD events. You can read more about ESD on our blog post.

Why you should use shielded containers?

As you know, electrostatic discharge can cause significant damage to static sensitive items. The static damage can happen almost instantly without any given warning, leading to many problems down the line. When electronic parts are not properly handled during manufacturing, assembly, storage or shipping, damage from ESD can reach into the millions of dollars each year.

Static should be avoided at all costs when working with static sensitive items. This can be done in a number of ways, one of them being using proper shielded containers.

For an ESD control container to be effective and meet IEC-61340-1-5 International Standard, the requirements are:

  • Surface resistance 1 x 104 to < 1 x 1011 ohms per IEC 61340-2-3.
  • Discharge Shielding (energy penetration) < 50 nanoJoules per IEC 61340-4-8.

Many people may opt for a non-shielding container over a shielded container due to its low cost, however this should be avoided!

Even though non-shielded containers are cheaper, they do not provide the necessary antistatic properties that allow you to properly store static sensitive items. Using these containers can, in effect, cause static damage to these electronics rather than protected them from it. You must always invest in the proper shielded containers to protect your static sensitive components from ESD and static damage. This will save you more money in the long-run, which is much more cost-effective than purchasing non-shielding containers and having to replace the damaged components.

Disadvantages of using non-shielding containers:

  • Increased cost.
  • Risk from ESD damage.
  • Handling inconvenience.

Why should you use ESD lids?

It is important to always enclose your shielding container or box with a lid, especially when you are outside of the EPA. This is because it will protect the enclosed static sensitive item from any electrostatic discharge it may encounter in the environment. If your container is inside of an EPA, it is recommended that you do place a lid on top, however it is not necessary. When using a shielded container, electrostatic charges and discharges take the path of least resistance. Packaging with the discharge shielding property protects ESD sensitive items from the effects of static discharge that are external to the package.

Which ESD foam should you use?

ESD foam comes in a variety of options, the top two options being black conductive foam and antistatic foam. Depending on your application and your budget, you should opt for the foam that best suits you. Antistatic and ESD conductive foam have many differences, although the key difference with conductive foam is that its resistance is inherent and long-lasting.

Antistatic Foam –

  • Polyurethane foam, chemically doped with an anti-static agent (surfactant) and coloured with a pink dye for identification.
  • Does not provide shielding.
  • It has a shelf life when exposed to the environment. Thus it is usually used as a one-time foam for shipping components.
  • Economical –  least expensive type of ESD foam.
  • Surface resistance of 10^(9) to 10^(10) Ohms or less
  • Soft, flexible, non-corrosive polyurethane
  • Non shedding.
  • Available in flat or profiled form.

Conductive Foam

  • Conductive polyurethane.
  • 1 x 103 to < 1 x 105 ohms.
  • Permanently conductive.
  • Will not lose electrical properties.
  • Foam will not discolour over time.
  • Higher initial investment; better value for long term applications.
  • Ideal for storing or transporting ESDS over a prolong period of time, and reusing the container.
  • Not recommended in applications where Static Dissipative properties are required.
